Founded in 1967, The Oak Grove Volunteer Fire Department began due to a Brotherhood Project of the Oak Grove Baptist Church. The membership of the church saw the need for fire protection in the community. W.E. Kuykendall was appointed president of the project, and later became the first Chief of the Department.

The Charter and name permission for the department was applied for December, 1967. January 1968 the name "Oak Grove Volunteer Fire Department Inc." was approved. The Charter was grated February 22, 1968, thus the official beginning of the department.

Then and now the purpose of the "Oak Grove Volunteer Fire Department Inc." is to sponsor and promote united action by the residents of the community, and for the Protection and Preservation of the lives and property against injury and destruction.

On March 8, 1968 a community meeting was held for the sole purpose of turning the Brotherhood Project into a community wide project! The department which we now have is all the evidence one needs to see that this meeting was a total success! The population of the original three mile district in 1968 was 3,000.

Due to the "no man's land" in the late 1970's the district grew to a five mile radius which assured that all property was covered .

Howard and Barbara Champion donated the property for the first station which had previously housed a Hammer Mill . This was the start of many generous donations to come! Local departments, such as Kings Mountain and Waco, donated and loaned equipment until the department was able to establish adequate funding. Funding which the local government provided was supplemented with private donations and fund raisers. The Ladies Auxiliary joined the Membership of the department in such events as Weddings, Cake Sales, Bar-B-Q's, and Dunking Booths at the Cleveland County Fair.

In March of 1968 the department made its first truck purchase, a 1959 Dodge Weapons Carrier. The truck and equipment set the department back a total of $1,400.00. April that same year the department made several more purchases:
*A Studebaker, which was quickly discovered not to be suitable, and later replaced.
*A 1951 International Tanker Truck; a joint endeavor with Civil Defense.
*A 1938 Chevrolet American LaFrance Pumper

The total of these three purchases was $1,485.00. Those were the days! In 1970 a pumper cost the department $18,000.00, and in 1999 a Pumper/Tanker cost the department $236,000.00.

The financial end of the spectrum has been and will always be a challenge, but the more important issue is the time that the members spend not only serving the community, but also training to be qualified .

During the first year the members spent 1200 man hours training. That same bunch of guys answered 25 fire calls and worked 11 funerals. In 2003 the Membership, which had grown to over 40 members, responded to over 300 calls!

In 1969 the department purchased the land that currently houses the station and the dedicated men built the station from the ground up! In the mid 70's the need to grow was evident and so one additional bay was added. In 1991, once again the fleet of the department warranted growth. Those results are the station as it is today!

In 1993 when the membership agreed to better meet the "purpose" of the department's charter, a First Responder program was established. This program set the precedence for Cleveland County. Cleveland County EMS assisted in establishing the protocol and regulations for the program. In 1999 North Carolina began a statewide MEDICAL RESPONDER CERTIFICATION program. We now have State Certified Medical Responders.

Our department operates with an average of 50 members, and those members are REQUIRED to obtain 36 hours of training each year. Meetings of the department are held the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of every month and training meetings are on the 2nd Thursdays. Members are required to attend these meetings as well.
